Carrie Underwood as Maria Von Trapp in a new poster for NBC’s The Sound of Music.

Carrie Underwood definitely has the look down to play Maria Von Trapp in the upcoming NBC production of “The Sound of Music.” The Rodgers & Hammerstein classic musical will air on Dec. with Underwood in the lead.

The role of Maria was immortalized by Julie Andrews in the 1965 Disney film by the same name.

Mary Martin did the same for the musical production on Broadway when it debuted in 1959. Songs from the show, including “Edelweiss”, “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Do-Re-Mi” and the title song “The Sound of Music” have become classics.

The story is based on the Maria’s memoir recounting the travails of the Trapp Family Singers in Austria during the time of the Nazi occupation in World War II. Underwood traveled to Austria with her husband and visted the Von Trapp house, now a museum, to get a feel for the role.

She’s featured in a new promotional poster that was released this week. She has the classic Austrian look down to the braids and the clothes.

The cast will also include “True Blood’s” Stephen Moyer as Capt. von Trapp and Broadway veterans Laura Benanti, Christian Borle and Audra McDonald.

Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford, the three-hour live production will air Dec. 5 at 8 PM.
