Jolie will be the fifth wicked witch to hit the big screen in the last two years. Theron played the wicked queen in 2012’s “Snow White and the Huntsman.”
That part went to Julia Roberts in the movie “Mirror, Mirror,” a slightly more light-hearted take on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale.
In this year’s “Oz the Great and Powerful,” Mila Kunis played the Wicked Witch of the West while Rachel Weisz played Evanora, the Wicked Witch of the East.
In the pantheon of evil witches, however, Maleficent may take the broomstick. Jolie stars with Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.
The movie provides a back story to “Sleeping Beauty.”
Maleficent is a beautiful, pure-hearted woman, who grows up in an idyllic kingdom until an invading army upends the peace. Maleficent leads the opposition but a ruthless betrayal turns her pure heart into stone.
Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and curses his newborn infant Aurora. But later she realizes that Aurora may be the key to peace and happiness for the realm.
“Maleficent” is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg. Jolie, Don Hahn, Matt Smith, Palak Patel and Sarah Bradshaw are executive producers. Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay.
“Maleficent” opens in theaters May 30, 2014 in time for the summer blockbuster season. Check out the new poster from Disney and follow TheImproper on Twitter for the latest movie updates.
