Vanessa Hudgens plays Apple in the compelling drama Gimme Shelter. And, as she appears in real life.
Hudgens character, “Apple” is a feisty, head-strong young girl, who wants something more for herself than her drug-addicted, prostitute mother can provide.
Her mother, June Bailey, only seems interested in putting Apple to work on the streets as soon as possible like herself. Given the choice, Apple runs away from home.
She’s determined to find her father, who it turns out is a well-to-do stock broker. He was only 19 when he knocked up June in a short fling, and now has a family of his own. But he takes her in. Their relationship is complicated when Apple finds out she’s pregnant.
The two have a falling out over Apple’s desire to keep the baby, and she hits the road again. She leads a rough existence that lands her in the hospital, where she meets in by Father McCarthy (James Earl Jones), the hospital chaplain.
He takes her to a home for unwed mothers much like herself and she begins to sort out her life. Hudgens turns in a stellar performance in the indie film.
The movie will be released Jan. 24. Check out the trailer below, let us know your thoughts and follow TheImproper on Twitter for the latest movie news.
