In Beatrice’s dystopian world people are segregated into five groups and she’s about to be placed.
Her fear is that she will be “divergent,” that is, doesn’t seem to fit in any category. If that happens, she could end up without a faction, a situation that could mean death.
The trailer opens with a scene of a Chicago, heavily damaged by war. Beatrice explains in a voiceover how the groups were created to keep the peace, but really are a way to control the population.
The groups are “Abnegation” for the selfless, “Amity” for the peaceful, “Candor” for the honest, “Dauntless” for the brave and “Erudite,” for the knowledgeable. Beatrice doesn’t fit into any of them, which means she can’t be controlled.
“Divergents threaten the system,” says Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet), the leader of Erudite and creator of the system. “It won’t be safe until they’re removed.”
But after joining the Dauntless group, Tobias “Four” Eaton, played by Theo James helps Beatrice develop the skills to survive… and challenge the system.
The film hits theaters Mar. 31. Check out the trailer below, let us know your thoughts and be sure to follow TheImproper on Twitter for the latest movie news.
