Stallone, now 67, starred with Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke in the original film.
It was Lundgren’s first theatrical release in 15 years. Fellow ’80s action stars Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger also made cameo appearances.
Despite being trashed by critics, it received a 49 percent “rotten” rating from rottentomatoes, the film was a hit at the box office. It grossed $274.5 million worldwide, guaranteeing as many sequels as Stallone could crank out.
“The Expendables 3” reunites Stallone with Statham, Jet Li, Lundgren, Schwarzenegger, Couture and Terry Crews.
The film, which now has a cult following, will also star Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Kelsey Grammer, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell and Robert Davi.
The film’s hero, Barney Ross (Stallone), squares off against The Expendable’s co-founder Conrad Stonebanks.
Stonebanks, a ruthless arms trader, survived a fight with Barnes and now is determined to destroy the group. Ross recruits a younger generation of mercenaries to help the team stop Stonebanks.
