Chloe Moretz graduates to a meaty dramatic role in a new trailer for the movie “If I Stay.” She plays a comatose woman who relives her life in an out-of-body experience as she hangs between life and death.

Moretz scored a breakout role when she was 12-years-old playing a potty-mouth superhero in the 2010 comedy “Kick Ass.”

Now 17, she’s transitioning into more mature roles. She’s also appearing in “Clouds of Sils Maria,” with Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore and “The Equalizer,” a thriller with Denzel Washington.

In the new trailer, she plays Mia Hall a talented musician on her way to Julliard with a rebellious boyfriend. Out for drive with her family, she’s involved in a horrendous car crash.

Her parents, played by Mireille Enos and Joshua Leonard and brother (Jakob Davies) are killed. She’s left on life support in a coma.

In the hospital, she flashes back into her past through an out-of-body experience. She watches as her friends and remaining family gather at the hospital.

She ponders her life and what direction it should take.

The film is an adaptation of Gayle Forman’s young adult novel. It’s directed by R.J. Cutler.

Check out the trailer below. “If I Stay” opens in theaters Aug. 22.
