Scott Haze plays a psychopathic killer whose descent into depravity and isolation is captured in a new trailer for James Franco’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s thriller, “Child of God.”
Does it get any stranger than this?
McCarthy is known for searingly graphic novels about the dark fringes of the human condition.
Franco co-wrote the screenplay, directed the picture and plays a cameo role. Judging by the trailer, he captures all the rawness of the novel.
Haze brings his character graphically to life. He plays Lester Ballard, a back-hills Tennessee boy, whose life takes a series of drastic turns.
He’s driven further and further from society into the deep recesses of his own primordial id, as he attempts to live off the grid.
Along the way, descends into cruelty and moral degradation. Yet he’s driven by humankind’s most base instincts–to survive.
The film has made the rounds, screening in competition at the 70th Venice International Film Festival, the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. and the New York Film Festival.
