Streep role is titled simply “The Witch,” and she’s hideous.
She’s more a traditional fairytale witch, unlike Theron’s Queen Revenna in “Snow White and the Huntsman” or Jolie’s “Maleficent.” They had an air of glamor and mystery. Streep’s character is simply haggard.
Other recent Hollywood witches include Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams in “Oz the Great and Powerful.”
“Into the Woods” is a musical compilation of fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm. It’s based on a 1987 Stephen Sondheim Broadway stage musical, but no singing is featured in the short clip.
Streep is joined by an all-star cast that includes Emily Blunt as the Baker’s Wife and James Corden as the Baker. Johnny Depp plays the Wolf, MacKenzie Mauzy is Rapunzel and Billy Magnussen is Rapunzel’s Prince.
Daniel Huttlestone is cast as Jack the Giant Killer, and Tracy Ullman plays Jack’s mother. The Little Red Riding Hood segment features Lilla Crawford.
Anna Kendrick plays Cinderella and Chris Pine plays Cinderella’s Prince. The wicked step-sisters are played by Lucy Punch and Tammy Blanchard, and Christine Baranski plays the nasty stepmother.
The characters’ stories are intertwined, unlike the Grimm’s ever meant them to be, but all have a central theme, the fulfillment of personal wishes.
Disney has scheduled a Christmas Day release for the picture.
