Eddie Redmayne plays a young Stephen Hawking in the new film ‘Theory of Everything,’ which is featured in a new trailer.

Eddie Redmayne landed the role of his career as theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and shows he’s up to the task in the first trailer for the upcoming romantic drama “Theory of Everything.”

Felicity Jones also turns in a impressive performance in the clip as his wife Jane, who meets Hawking while they are college students.

The movie charts their romance, Hawking’s rise as a leading theoretical physicist and the development of his debilitating illness from a motor neuron disease related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

As Hawking’s fame grows his world shrinks. He becomes increasingly disabled until he is paralyzed and must communicate through a voice synthesizer. At the time of his diagnosis, he was 21 and was given two years to live.

Hawking not only beat the diagnosis, but at 72, he continues to work as Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge in England.

Hawking was involved in the film and his voice is used when in scenes where he is wheelchair-bound. His actual voice can also be heard on the trailer.

He met Jane Wilde, a friend of his sister’s, shortly before his diagnosis. Their relationship developed and their love story becomes the focus of the movie.

They were married in 1965 and had their first child two years later, while Jane was studying for her doctoral degree. In real life, their relationship was frequently strained, and Jane took an outside lover with Stephen’s permission.

In the spring of 1995, they divorced and Hawking married one of his caregivers, Elaine Mason, the same year. The film is based on Jane’s book.

It’s set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
