Depp’s track record with off-beat films has been so-so.
His memorable character Capt. Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series is an unparalleled success, as well has his take on the Mad Hatter in the 2010 film “Alice in Wonderland.”
He’s currently filming a sequel, “Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass,” due out in 2016.
But his 2013 film “The Lone Ranger” was a flop. His portrayal of Indian sidekick Tonto was widely criticized by Native American groups. He’s also has never been able to pull off any of his movies based on eccentric gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.
In the new clip, Depp plays Charlie Mortdecai, a roguish art dealer who must out-smart the Russian mob and British MI5 secret service in a hunt for a stolen painting that possibly contains the secret to a horde of Nazi gold.
Mortdecai must con his way around the world in search of the loot. Depp draws on Edwardian-era stereotypes to create the character, who looks like a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Perot.
The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn, Aubrey Plaza, Jeff Goldblum, Oliver Platt and Paul Bettany.
It’s slated for a February 6, 2015 release via Lionsgate.
