Bradley Cooper is cool under fire in the first new trailer for “American Sniper,” a Clint Eastwood-directed movie based on the autobiography of Chris Kyle, the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history.

Kyle served four tours in Iraq with 160 “confirmed” kills out of 255 claimed kills.

Judging from the new trailer, the movie has the potential to supplant “The Hurt Locker” as the definitive Iraq war movie. The 2008 war film, produced and directed by Kathryn Bigelow, was about a three-man bomb squad during the Iraq War.

“American Sniper” follows Kyle’s exploits over four tours in the Iraq and juxtaposes his war experience with his life in America.

He has a young wife and a new child and in many ways he’s a typical suburban dad. But in Iraq, he’s a deadly killer who must make split-second, life-or-death decisions about people who wander into his sights.

The clip features Cooper perched in his sniper position with a spotter, providing cover for American soldiers moving up the street. A man talking on a cell phone appears, is he a target?

A woman and child walk into the street from a house an approach the advancing soldiers. The child is holding a grenade; should he take him out.

Even this little snippet of action is nail biting.

The film could have easily fallen victim to flag-waving and hagiography, but Eastwood seems to understand that Kyle’s saga is a story of conscience, conflict and wrenching emotions.

The movie also stars Sienna Miller, Luke Grimes, Kyle Gallner, Jake McDorman, Cory Hardrict and Sam Jaeger.
