Matthew McConaughey’s character Cooper faces a world where space may be the final frontier, but it’s made in a Hollywood basement — literally. He learns as much in a new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar.”

If you’re wondering how the world got into this mess in the not-too-distant future, this trailer provides a clue.

Tea party nudniks and other assorted Luddites have turned the planet into a turgid world. Global warming has wreaked havoc on the climate.

Instead of admitting their mistakes, the ruling class simply rewrites the textbooks to reflect their new truth; up is down, down is up and space was a waste of time and money.

With austerity, comes lowered expectations.

The U.S. government takes the lead, insisting that the Apollo moon landings never happened. All school textbooks are rewritten to reflect the new truth.

In the trailer, Cooper finds out as much when he visits the principal at his daughter’s school.

Daughter Murph, played by Mackenzie Foy, is being punished because she brought one of her dad’s old textbooks to class that says humans actually walked on the moon.

“We’ve replaced them with the corrected versions,” says the principal. “…explaining how the Apollo missions were faked to bankrupt the Soviet Union.”

Check out Cooper’s reaction in the trailer below.

“Interstellar” also stars Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain and Ellen Burstyn. It hits theaters next Friday (Nov. 7).
