“Cinderella” is an oft told tale that Disney immortalized in an animated 1950 musical fantasy released by RKO Radio Pictures. Now, however, “Cinderella” is a live action film that includes Disney’s trademark CGI special effects.
“It’s a very unusual project because anybody sitting down almost certainly knows the story,” Director Kenneth Branagh told E! News.
“I think we get to refresh, reactive and recreate Cinderella from the inside out. The honoring of the original comes in, I think, as sort of a lightness of touch and a sort of lavishness,” he added.
As the story goes, Ella, who becomes known as “Cinderella,” moves in with her stepmother (Blanchett) and daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera), after her father remarries following the death of Ella’s mom.
After her father unexpectedly dies, Ella is left to the cruel devices of her step-mother and step-sisters. But Ella lives by her dying mother’s wish to “have courage and be kind.”
With the help of her fairy god mother (Bonham-Carter), Ella is able to attend a ball where she hopes to meet up again with a young handsome stranger from the Palace. Little did she realize the stranger, Kit (Madden), is a prince.
The film opens in theaters March 13, 2015.
