Shailene Woodley shows off her skills in a new trailer for her upcoming movie “Insurgent,” and immediately draws comparisons with action-adventure star Jennifer Lawrence, who’s rocking it in the “Hunger Games” series.

The “Insurgent” trailer is the first to tout the upcoming movie, which is the second in the “Divergent” series, based on the bestselling books by Veronica Roth.

Naomi Watts joins the cast with Octavia Spencer, Suki Waterhouse and Daniel Dae Kim. Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, Jai Courtney, Mekhi Phifer, Ray Stevenson and Maggie Q reprise their roles. Robert Schwentke directs.

In the new movie, Woodley’s character Tris lives in a dystopian society where the population is divided into factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent).

But every so often someone doesn’t fit easily into any of the groups and they are branded as divergent. That’s Tris’s fate. But divergents have special powers, and Tris’s are put to the test in the series’ second installment.

After polishing her skills with the Divergents, all hell breaks lose when Erudite tries to seize power from Abnegation. Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews, played by a steely Kate Winslet, discovers Tris’s powers and sends her minions to hunt her down.

She needs Tris to unlock the energy in a powerful cube.

Tris and her Dauntless love interest, Four, played by Theo James, lead the uprising. Finally, Tris is captured and is pitted against the only person who can defeat her–herself.

Haunted by her past and desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris faces one impossible challenge after another. Ultimately, she unlocks the truth about the past and the future of her world, according to an official synopsis.

The movie has a number of parallels to Lawrence’s “Hunger Games.” Jen’s character, Katniss Everdeen, is also caught up in a dystopian society ruled by an autocrat who oppresses the vast majority of its citizens.

Katniss learns her survival skills in two deadly Hunger Games, an event staged by the ruling Capitol that pits 24 “tributes” against each other in a fight to the death as part of an annual celebration–and a reminder of who rules.
