Malick couldn’t have picked a better backdrop to test the limits of human emotion, although like most of his projects, the movie’s plot is shrouded in mystery.
What the clip delivers is a pastiche of Hollywood Babylon from Malibu to the Hollywood Hills. Amid the glitz and glamour are flashes of rampant decadence, betrayal and self-destruction.
The film’s tile is one of the few hint suggesting Malick’s direction. The Knight of Cups is a Tarot card, used to tell fortunes.
The Knight symbolizes someone who is in touch with his intuition and emotions. The Knight uses them for his own good during his quests of romance and seduction. “He can manifest as an event, a person in your life, or as a part of yourself,” according to one interpretation.
The movie synopsis also tells this tale:
“Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep. Rick’s (Bale) father used to read this story to him as a boy. The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth?”
The cast includes Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Brian Dennehy and Ben Kingsley.
It will screen for the first time at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.
