The Avengers are back in a new “Age of Ultron” trailer that reveals at least four possible plot twists as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye facing their biggest threat yet from artificial intelligence (AI).

Ultron (James Spader), the creator of seemingly indestructible robots, has decided humans, whom it was designed to protect, are earth’s biggest enemies.

How their mission changed from protector to destroyer is one of the most obvious plot twists in the movie. It sets the stage for an epic battle between S.H.I.E.L.D agents and Ultron’s legion of robots, which are out to destroy mankind.

In a deadly irony, Tony Stark created Ultron, a self-aware, self-teaching, artificial intelligence, as part of a dormant peacekeeping program. But what causes it to turn against humans?

The plot twist appears to be revealed about 20 seconds into the clip when a voice-over ominously declares: “Everyone creates they thing they dread.”

Ultron is clearly Tony Stark’s creation. But Stark appears to have inadvertently infused his subconscious fears and existential fatalism into Ultron’s artificial intelligence.

Those two factors possibly triggered Ultron’s own fatalism and may also be the secret to his ultimate defeat. There’s also a suggestion that Stark is subconsciously controlling Ultron without realizing it.

Everytime it appears to be beaten it reinvents itself.

One thing is certain, the Avengers appear unlikely to defeat Ultron by conventional means. His legion of robots reek havoc on civilization and seem unstoppable. They will have to outsmart the AI.

The clue to that plot twist comes at 1:20 into the clip when another ominous voice-over proclaims: “I’m going to tear you apart… from the inside.”

It appears to reveal Ultron’s strategy to defeat the Avengers by provoking them to fight each other. The scene after that shows Thor grabbing Stark by the throat and lifting him off the ground.

What the trailer doesn’t answer is what role Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character Pietro Maximoff, aka Quicksilver, will play along with Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch.

She appears briefly and shows off her power 36 seconds into the clip.

The Avengers are facing their biggest threat yet from a menacing enemy that has largely been created by their own hands… and minds. Will the new movie ultimately be a mind game?
