Bill Murray has gone back to odd-ball comedy after two forays into serious films with welcome relief. He appears in a new trailer for his latest film “Rock the Kasbah,” and he’s at his sardonic best as a washed up record producer.

This isn’t the new Bill Murray, it’s the old Bill Murray from the days of “Caddyshack,” “Meatballs” and “Stripes.”

The film is written by Mitch Glazer and directed by Barry Levinson. Zooey Deschanel, Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, and Bruce Willis provide enough comedic talent to light a small city.

The movie is set in Afghanistan and the humor is as dry as the swirling desert winds.

Murray plays Richie Lanz, a down-on-his-luck music producer who is looking for an angle–any angle–to get back in the game.

He thinks he’s found it when he books one of his acts, a female rocker played by Deschanel, on a USO tour in Afghanistan.

Once in country, the antics began. Lanz discovers an Afghan singer with an out-of-this-world voice and gets wrapped up helping to produce Afghanistan’s version of talent show “American Idol.”

Only one problem, he’s in the middle of a war. Lanz must not only deal with Afghanistan’s seedy night life but also marauding Mujaheddin and the U.S. military.

The trailer touches on some emotional moments, too, as dreams and aspirations collide with the reality in the impoverished, warn-torn nation.

Like many comedians, Murray has long sought credibility as an actor by playing serious roles. Hence his appearance in films like “Hyde Park on the Hudson” and “Monuments Men.”

But to fans, the Murray of “Caddyshack,” “Meatballs” and “Stripes” will always be the most endearing.

The movie is slated for release Oct. 15.
