Larson won the award for Best Actress in a leading role on Sunday night, and the DVD hit the streets on Tuesday (Mar.1)
The studio is obviously hoping to leverage Larson’s win into a lot more revenue. The film grossed a modest $23 million worldwide during its limited release.
It opened Oct. 26 with a $118,298 box office during its debut weekend. It had a wider release in January, but still only ran in 862 theaters nationwide. It grossed $1.335 million during its debut the second time out.
Larson, 26, scored a breakout role in the 2013 indie drama “Short Term 12.” Critics hailed her performance. Before that she had small supporting roles in “Greenberg” (2010), “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010) and “21 Jump Street” (2012).
She’s probably best known for her role as Kate Gregson, the self-indulgent, often cruel, very naive and sexually promiscuous daughter, in the television series “United States of Tara.” It ran for three seasons on the Showtime Network.
In “Room,” she played a troubled mother who risks all to escape a room where she’d been held captive for seven years. Her five-year-old son sees the outside world for the first time. The New York Post proclaimed the film a “one-of-a-kind, must-see experience…nothing short of astonishing!”
It also starred Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen, Sean Bridgers and William H. Macy.
The picture was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. Larson also won the Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award.
The home entertainment release includes audio commentary with Director Lenny Abrahamson, Cinematographer Danny Cohen, Editor Nathan Nugent and Production Designer Ethan Tobman.
Three behind-the-scenes featurettes focus on making the film and the process behind the room.
The Blu-ray and DVD retail for $24.99 and $19.98, respectively. But you can buy them for $16.99 or $12.99 on amazon.com by clicking the link above.
