The original 1996 movie scored a whopping $817 million globally, which makes you wonder why Centropolis Entertainment and Fox waited so long to make a sequel.
But here it is 20 years later. The new film sticks pretty close to the original. Only the special effects are bigger and some new cast members have been added.
Which makes you wonder why Hemsworth, who hails from Down Under, was picked to play an American hero. In the first film, that honor went to Will Smith, who played Captain Steven Hiller.
He’s a ghostly presence in this film. His step-son, Dylan Dubrow-Hiller, played by Jessie Usher, step into his shoes.
But plenty of original cast members return, including Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner.
This time around, earth is armed with weapons technology that it gleaned from the aliens. But the aliens haven’t been sitting on their hands. They’ve also developed new and frightening weapons that again put the world at a disadvantage.
Only through daring–an ingenuity–will the earth be able to survive the onslaught. And we’re talking major CGI destruction.
In the latest clip, the aliens show off gravity weapons that can lift whole cities into the air and send them crashing back to the grand. And when they land on earth, they take up the entire Atlantic Ocean.
Before their final defeat last time around, the aliens sent a distress signal to their remaining forces in deep space. Other stragglers hid out on earth.
The aliens get the message and send and even bigger battle fleet to teach the pesky Americans a lesson. But, boy, are they in for a surprise.
The only question is, when do we get to attack their planet? Maybe “Independence Day 3?”
