Australian actress Nicky Whelan is getting a big break in the Owen Wilson movie “Hall Pass,” which is raising Whelan’s profile dramatically here in the United States.

“Hall Pass” which opened last weekend (Feb. 25) finished No. 1 in domestic box office gross with $13.5 million.

Disney and Touchstone’s 3D cartoon “Gnomeo & Juliet,” finished second in a virtual dead heat with $13.4 million.

Whelan, 29, is well known in her homeland for her role in hit Aussie soap “Neighbours” and numerous magazine cover photos.

She quit her “Neighbours” role as Pepper Steiger in 2007, and headed for Hollywood.

Before “Hall Pass,” her most visible role came in the final season of hit TV show “Scrubs. ” She appeared as Maya, an Australian med school student.

Being cast by Peter and Bobby Farrelly as Wilson’s love interest in “Hall Pass” was her first major break.

“I remember when she walked in I said to myself: ‘Please be good. Please be a good actress.’ We were so happy,” Peter said during casting.

“The Farrellys flipped over her. Nicky, aside from being easy on the eyes, was also very funny and great in the part,” Wilson said.

Whelan has a toned, athletic figure, so no wonder she’s appeared in a number of Australian sports magazines.
