Renee Zellweger is Judy Garland. The actress best known for her “Bridget Jones “movies plays the legendary songstress in the final concert of her life, a series of sold out shows in London.
Principal photography began on the picture today (Mar. 19) in London. Studio honchos released the first photo of Zellweger in character over Twitter.
Director Rupert Goold helms the picture based on a script by Tom Edge, best known for “The Crown.” Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock and Michael Gambon co-star.
The film is set during the winter of 1968. Garland performs at a series of shows at the Talk of the Town nightclub in London. They would prove to be her last. She died a year later without taking the stage again.
Garland was trying to launch a comeback after 40 years in Hollywood. She began her career as a child actress and most famously starred in the 1939 production of “The Wizard of Oz.”
By the time “Judy” unfolds, she’s “exhausted.” Garland is “haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood and gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids,” according to the film synopsis.
She’d struggled with drug and alcohol addictions for years, went broke and was strung out on barbiturates when she died of an overdose at the age of 47.
The film recreates some of her legendary battles with management, and also portrays her warmth and charm. The picture also doubles as a love story between Garland and Mickey Deans, her fifth and final husban
It will also feature some of her best known songs such as “Over the Rainbow,” the iconic theme song from “The Wizard of Oz.”
Zellweger won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the 2003 film “Cold Mountain.” She was nominated for Best Actress twice for her roles in “Bridget Jones Diary” (2001) and “Chicago” (2002).
The film is targeted for release sometime this year this year.
