Mr. Popper, it seems, is a clueless, driven businessman who just can’t seem to get his head around values that should be important, until he inherits six penguins.
He boards them in his swank Manhattan apartment, which he turns into a “winter wonderland,” and they teach him a few things about life.
No heavy CGI effects here. Carrey worked on a refrigerated soundstage with real Gentoo Penguins.
Carrey was all about CGI in his last film, the Disney’s animated reboot of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”
Oddly the versatile actor is also bouncing back into family fare after starring in a raunchy gay comedy “I Love You Phillip Morris.”
He has an explicit gay love scene in the movie with co-star Ewan McGregor.
He also involved in the recently announced project “Pierre, Pierre,” with “Bruno” director Larry Charles.
In the Richard and Florence Atwater, classic 1938 book, Popper is a poor housepainter who gets the penguins by mail after writing into a radio broadcast hosted by Antarctic explorer Admiral Drake.
Eventually, one penguin turns into 12, and the Poppers train the penguins to perform to support them.
Let’s just say the film adaptation is based loosely on the book.
