Astrid Bergès-Frisbey exuded a sexy innocence as a mermaid in Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” Now, the ephemeral beauty has resurfaced in a new photo shoot for Spanish weekly S Moda.
If her name is unfamiliar, that’s because Bergès-Frisbey is a French actress and almost all of her work has been overseas.
Based in Paris, she made her acting debut on French television in 2007, and is consider one of the nation’s brightest stars.
She’s appeared in such French films “La Fille du Puisatier,” “Bruc,” “Extase,” “La Premiere Etoile” and “Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique.”
She was handpicked by director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer for the role of the mermaid Serena.
Before her debut in American cinema, Astrid, who is fluent in French and Spanish, had to learn English, and during filming in Hawaii, she had to stay out of the sun so her skin would stay milky white.
In the film, she becomes the love interest of co-star Sam Clafin, who plays Philip Swift, a captive missionary.
Serena is important to the pirate crew because a mermaid’s tear is need to activate the waters from the Fountain of Youth, which the crew sets out to discover.
After she is captured, Philip falls in love with her, and he is used to trick Serena into crying.
In the end, Serena takes a mortally wounded Philip into her arms and swims off into the deep to save him, which hopefully means she’ll be back for the next Pirates film.
Ironically, she made the leap to modeling from acting in 2010. Usually it’s the other way around.
She appeared in the spring/summer and autumn/winter campaigns for French Connection.
In her latest shoot, she covers the Nov. 26 issue of S Moda. She modeled Chanel, Emanuel Ungaro, Isabel Marant and Balmain for photographer Pablo Delfos.
Francesca Riniciari handled styling and Isabel Moralejo provided the fashion direction.
