Tom Cruise is drawing raves from director Adam Shankman for his portrayal of Stacee Jaxx in the rock music send up, “Rock of Ages,” and a new trailer for the movie shows Cruise over the top in the role.

Cruise’s Jaxx, the frontman for heavy metal hair band Arsenal, feigns all of the rock star trappings, from the affected attitude down to fur coats, bandanna, aviator sunglasses and leather pants.

Cruise reportedly based his character on Guns ‘N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose, but he looks every inch like Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. He’s probably a combination of both plus a lot whole lot more.

“It’s this brilliant mashup, it seems, of Axl Rose, Keith Richards and Jim Morrison,” says Shankman.

There were no shortage of stars lining up for roles in the picture.

Catherine Zeta Jones, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, UK comedian Russell Brand, R&B singer Mary J. Blige, who’s been there, and Julianne Hough are among the cast.

The film, based on the Broadway musical by the same name, is set in the 1980s when heavy metal hair bands ruled the rock scene.

The love story centers on wannabe rocker Drew Boley, (Diego Boneta) and Sherrie Christian (Hough) who travel to Los Angeles to find fame and land on notrious Sunset Strip.

Hough, who previously starred on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” puts her training to good use when her character is forced to become a stripper.

The video provides glimpses of Cruise, Zeta-Jones as a Bible thumping church lady, and Baldwin as a bar owner who is trying to convince Arsenal to play there to save the joint.

The movie is also fueled by the music of such ’80s acts like Bon Jovi, Poison, Twisted Sister, Foreigner and Journey.
