Hobbit First Look: Bilbo Baggins Back in First New Trailer! (watch)

Martin Freeman is in full swing as Bilbo Baggins in the first trailer from the highly anticipated “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first of two movies that will be prequels to the highly successful “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Peter Jackson is directing with solid credentials. He helmed “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and the film won three Oscars. He also serves as producer and co-writer.

“Lord of the Rings” veterans Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom are also returning for the two-picture deal.

Evangeline Lilly will play Tauriel, while Luke Evans plays Bard.

Most of the Lord’s production crew and technical staff are returning as well.

In the first movie, Baggins begins a quest to retake the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Approached by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellan), Bilbo joins thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage).

They must make their way through Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers to accomplish their goal.

Finally, Baggins meets Gollum, a role reprised by Andy Serkis from the “Lord of the Rings.” The creature mentors Baggins and gives him powers he never dreamed of.

“The Lord of the Rings” and The Hobbit are both works by Oxford professor and author J. R. R. Tolkien.

The film trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide during their runs between 2000 and 2003.

“The Hobbit” is expected to debut in December 2012, followed by “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” in 2013.
