Actress Demi Moore’s hospital trip, amid fresh reports of heavy drug use, suggest that the 49-year-old actress could have been suicidal following the break up of her marriage to toy boy Ashton Kutcher.

Moore is back on her feet and was released from Sherman Oaks Hospital in Los Angeles today (Jan. 26), three days after being admitted for unknown causes. She is said to be entering rehab.

A number of tabloids have reported that the dangerously thin star was inhaling nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, from “whip-its.” They are small canisters of gas used to recharge whipped cream dispensers.

Nitrous oxide induces a euphoric, dissociated, out-of-body state. It also causes rapid heartbeat and if inhaled in significant quantities can lead to cardiac arrest.

Doctors often give oxygen with it because the gas displaces oxygen and causes the body’s carbon dioxide levels to rise,” said Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, who often treats celebrities.

“That’s the danger,” Glatter said. Carbon dioxide in the blood causes shortness of breath and sleepiness, causing a person to lose consciousness, he told Web site Healthpop.

Emergency workers were told Moore had been doing “whip-its,” one of Moore’s friends told TMZ. The drug caused seizures and Moore started shaking uncontrollably, while lapsing into semi-consciousness. In her weakened state, she could have easily suffered cardiac arrest.

“Demi has been taking Adderall and drinking energy drinks and starving herself and those are some of the serious causes that led her to collapse on Monday night,” a source told gossip site radaronline.

“She’s constantly jacked up on Adderall and combining that with not eating accounts for her loopy behavior and anorexic body frame. She literally refuses to eat any food.”
