Matthew Broderick plays a Ferris Beuller knock-off from his classic 1986 film “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off” in an upcoming Super Bowl ad for Honda. But this time, Ferris should have stayed in bed.

Viewers would have to be at least 35 to even vaguely remember the movie. In any event, Ferris, or make that Broderick, is an actor. His bland existence is symbolized by, what else, the paean to suburbia, the Honda CRV. Okay, its a red one but that only makes it worse.

In the movie, Ferris cops a classic Ferrari convertible owned by the father of his best pal Cameron Frye played by Alan Ruck. It’s the ultimate act of parental defiance and revolt against materialism.

Bueller scoops girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) and uses the Ferrari the way its meant to be used–joy riding.

Somehow, the Honda CRV fails to convey the same rebelliousness of a fire-engine red 1961 Ferrari 250 GT, which would be worth near $2 million at auction in today’s market. But maybe that’s the point.

Honda released a 15-second teaser for the ad last week, without revealing itself as the sponsor. But word leaked, so the car company previewed the ad today. It unfolds in the same vein as the movie. Ferris cons his way out of going to work by feigning illness.

This time his nemisis, Walter Lindy, isn’t the high school principal, but apparently his agent. “How can I handle work on a day like today,” Broderick says repeating one of several lines from the movie.

He takes a roller coaster ride at an amusement park, then it’s off to the Museum of Natural History where he stares down a stuffed walrus. From there karaoke in Chinatown and finally a restaurant. The parking valet takes the CRV for a thrill ride. You can bet that would happen.
