Abraham Lincoln slayed many dragons in his life, including slavery, but vampires? In a new trailer for Tim Burton’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer,” the 16th president makes mince meat of the Cullen clan in the woods of Ohio.

The movie, the latest to capitalize on the nation’s obsession with vampires, is premised on newly discovered diaries of Lincoln as a youth growing up in the Midwest.

Based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, Lincoln’s family has a long history of run-ins with the blood suckers. His father explains that a vampire killed Abraham’s grandfather in 1786. Abe also learns that his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, died from a does of vampire blood.

That sets him off on a path of revenge against the vampires who inhabit the woods near his farm. His weapon of choice is an axe. Lincoln was known in his youth to work splitting logs into rails for fences.

Judging from the trailer, the film has all the Hallmarks of a Burton picture, including dark scenes and plenty of action. Lincoln is shown wielding an axe Ninja style, whirling in around his body.

He does battle with a group of vampires and almost loses his life. But another vampire, Henry Sturges, who becomes the keeper of his diaries, saves him. Lincoln learns that some vampires are good and others are evil.

The movie cleverly weaves historical figures like Edgar Allen Poe, and historical events into the plot to explain how vampires came to America. Their plan is to enslave all Americans. Lincoln, by now an abolitionist, vows not to let that happen.

The movie will debut June 22; check out the trailer below:
