Machiavellian bluster highlights the latest trailer for HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” as cold as the winter’s rising storms. “The war of five kings they’re calling it. Nothing matters but how it ends,” a voice-over intones.
Indeed, the trailer suggests that all hell will break loose when Season 2 debuts on April 1. “The time to strike is now,” says Daenerys “Dany” Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). “The Starks fight the Lannisters and the Baratheons fight each other.”
Daenerys, the exiled daughter of the late King Robert of the Seven Kingdoms of Wisneros, wants her revenge. Robert’s death put the throne in play and the families will stop at nothing to possess it.

But Daenerys has a secret weapon to reclaim her rights–dragons. The beasts come from the mysterious east and they are heralded by a comet in the sky.
Once they are grown, they wil lay waste to armies and cities, she vows. Ned’s bastard Jon Snow (Kit Harington) seems to experience one of the mysterious creature beyond The Wall.
Get ready for bloodshed, political intrigue and lust. Lots of lust. Stannis Baratheon, brother of the late King Robert who died last season in a hunting accident, touched off the conflict by declaring for the throne.
“My brother left no true-born heirs by right of birth and blood,” he revealed in an earlier teaser. “I do this day lay claim to the island throne of Westeros that all true men declare their loyalty. The iron throne is mine by right.”
But there seems to be little room for compromise in his declaration: “They will bend the knee or I will destroy them,” he vows.
The hit HBO show is based on “A Song of Ice and Fire” a series of books by George R.R. Martin. Fans of the series will recognize the plot lines from “A Clash of Kings.”
