Jennifer Lawrence says she initially had doubts about playing Katniss, the lead character in the highly anticipated film “The Hunger Games.” But she was able to muster her confidence from a surprise source.
“She is a 16-year-old girl, but she’s a 16-year-old girl that has a depth to her no 16-year-old girl of our time could have,” she says of her character. “But she is still 16.”
The 21-year-old actress says in a new interview with Jeanne Wolf that she was confident she could pull off the role after Suzanne Collins, author of the Hunger Games books, said she had faith in her.
“It was so incredible, because I’m her biggest fan,” Lawrence says. “I love the book so much, I’m obsessed with it.”
Lawrence says she was initially hesitant about the role because of critics concerns that she was too old to play a 16-year-old and because she had blond hair.
“I talked to Suzanne after I got the part on the phone; I was still in England. And, hearing it from the woman who created Katniss herself, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It gave me the boost I needed.”
Lawrence also said her co-star Josh Hutcherson was also supportive.
“He can charm the world with three sentences,” she says “He’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. It was like being `12-years-old every day at work with him.”
In the movie, Katniss is torn between Hutcherson and actor Liam Hemsworth. They play Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, respectively. Both compete for her affections.
