Colin Ferrell, Jessica Beil and Kate Bekinsale star in the remake of “Total Recall,” the 1990 film that helped put Arnold Schwarzenegger on the map. But this time out the movie will be really different, judging by a new teaser for an upcoming trailer.
Of course, there’s not much to judge by. You know Hollywood marketing has gotten out of control when even trailers have trailers. The 32-second clip provides only brief snapshots of the movie.
But it’s clear that the overwhelming message is the film will be filled with high-tech gadgetry and lots of action.
Director Len Wiseman and co-writers Mark Bomback, James Vanderbilt and Kurt Wimmer have promised that their movie will far more political.
The writers drew their inspiration from the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick.
While Arnold’s move was set on Mars, this movie takes place on earth. Set in 2084, the world has largely been divided into two spheres of influence, one based in China and the other in Euroamerica, a combination of the United States and Europe.
Farrell plays a common factory worker Douglas Quaid, who has fantasies about being a top secret agent. Enter Rekall, a company that can turn dreams into real memories. Farrell decides to go for it, and is dragged into a surreal world where freedom fighters are trying to overthrow the corrupt Fascist government.
He’s on the run from the police, who are under the thumb of Vilos Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston). He’s President of Euroamerica and all-around evil nemesis, who sits atop an empire controlled by corporations. (Sound familiar?)
Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to search for the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate and all hell breaks loose.
With a $200 million budget, the film is shooting for blockbuster status, hoping to capitalize on the cult status among diehard fans of the original film.
The full teaser will air Sunday (Apr. 1) on ABC during the Boston Celtics game against the Miami Heat. An extended cut trailer will be released online. The movie will debut in August. Check out the teaser below.
