Meryl Streep Returns as Iron Lady in DVD, Blu-Ray Release 1Meryl Streep, who won the best actress academy award for “The Iron Lady,” will return as former English Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher in the Blu-ray release of the movie.

Streep was widely praised and criticized for her complex portrayal of Thatcher, who led Great Britain from 1979 to 1990, coinciding with the Reagan years in the United States. Her legacy is debated even to this day.

“Streep has the imbasilisk stare; the tilted, faintly predatory posture. Her delivery, too, is eerily good – a show of demure solicitude, invariably overtaken by steely, wild-eyed stridency,” according to a review in London’s Guardian newspaper.

Her nomination for an Oscar was no surprise, but she was not favored to win over other nominees such as Viola Davis for “The Help,” Rooney Mara for “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” and Michelle Williams for “My Week With Marilyn.”

“The Iron Lady” follows Thatcher’s life, growing up a “common” grocer’s daughter whose social ambition and steel will — along with the love of her husband and confidant, Denis (Jim Broadbent) — propelled her to unprecedented power in a world dominated by men,” according to the movie summary.

The film earned just over $107 million worldwide during its theater run, with 72 percent of the gross coming from overseas. The movie was a bit of a dud domestically. Critics were evenly divided on the film, giving it a 53 percent rating on rottentomatoes, which tracks reviews.

It was Streep’s first Oscar win since her performance in “Sophie’s Choice” nearly 30 years ago. The DVD and Blu-ray editions provide a broader look at the film, Thatcher and Streep in five featurettes.
