Tom Hanks and Halle Berry take the plunge into the time warp in a new trailer for the fantasy movie “Cloud Atlas.” Time warps, however, are best left to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
The campy ’70s cult classic made popular the song “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again.” The film, a B-movie send up of science fiction and horror pictures, is about an alien race journeys to earth through a time warp and parties like there’s no tomorrow. That should have ended it.
But a number of films have come along since then that deal with the mysteries of time. Sadly, they never really pull it off. “Cloud Atlas” is the latest. The visuals are stunning, thanks to modern technology, but the story seems plodding and disjointed, judging from the extended trailer.
That’s usually the problem. There’s never enough time in a feature-length movie to pull together all of the disparate plot lines that can be explained leisurely in a book; that seems to be the case here.
Directors and co-writers Lana and Andy Wachowski, created another terrible time-warp movie, “The Matrix.” So you know where this is coming from.
“Cloud Atlas,” based on a 2004 book by the same name, has six different story lines, each taking place in a different time and place. Yet are all related.
Hanks gets some heavyweight help from Berry, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving and Hugh Grant. South Korean actress Doona Bae is also featured as Sonmi-451, a genetically engineered clone.
“Cloud Atlas” is scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and hits theaters in October. You may have to read the book to understand the picture. Check out the trailer below.
