Emma Watson Sneak Peek in Perks of Being Wallflower (photos) 1Emma Watson gets her first big test of her ability to carry a picture, post “Harry Potter.” Her new film “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” is set to debut, and new stills have been released showing her in action.

Watson’s screen time has been limited. She had a small part in “My Week with Marilyn,” playing a production assistant named Lucy. “Perks” is her first starring role.

The film, however, has an ensemble cast, which should give Watson some cover, should it flop. “Perks” is a coming of age film about a group of rebellious high school kids who are trying to figure out how they fit into the larger world.

The cast includes Logan Lerman as Charlie, Ezra Miller as Patrick, Nina Dobrev as Candace and Mae Whitman as Mary-Elizabeth. Paul Rudd, Kate Walsh and Dylan McDermott also appear.

Watson plays Sam, Patrick’s step-sister, a hot-to-trot senior who takes Charlie, a misfit teenager under her wing and tries to draw him out of his shell. The movie examines drug use, homosexuality and teen culture. The book on which it’s based was controversial when it was published in 1999.

‘I’d been reading scripts since the fourth Harry Potter movie and just really didn’t read anything that I really just loved instantly and then I read Perks of Being a Wallflower,’ Emma told Just Jared.

‘I was incredibly moved by it and just instantly knew that the movie had to be made and that I had to play Sam.” she said.

The film is a decent transition for Watson, 22, who is best known of course for her ten-year role as Hermione Granger in the blockbuster “Harry Potter” series. She has two more films coming out next year, the even more daring “The Bling Ring,” about Hollywood celebrity burglars, and “End of the World,” a Seth Rogen comedy where she plays herself.

Perks is set for release Sept. 21.
