Olivia Wilde’s bad-girl stripper Brooke adds some electricity to a new trailer for “Butter,” a dark comedy about greed, ambition, power and ego played out in an Iowa butter-carving competition.
If you think the movie is a metaphor for modern day society and our deeply flawed political system, you would be right.
The action kicks off when Bob Pickler, played by Ty Burrell, decides to retire after reigning as Iowa’s champion butter carver for 15 years. The political vacuum touches off a free-for-all that includes his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
No, wrong movie; make that Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner), who secretly harbors her own ambitions fostered by years as her husband’s loyal, high-profile sidekick. Only one problem, Barack Obama is standing in her way in the guise of 10-year-old Destiny (Yara Shahidi).
She’s the African-American foster child of Julie and Ethan (Alicia Silverstone and Rob Corddry), who just happens to be a naturally gifted butter carver.
The competition turns cut-throat and a host of characters are drawn into the intrigue, including Brooke, Bob’s would-be mistress, Carol-Ann (Kristen Schaal), Bob’s No. 1 fan, who also enter the competition. With stepdaughter Kaitlen (Ashley Greene) riding her at every turn, Laura enlists dim-witted former boyfriend Boyd (Hugh Jackman) to play some dirty tricks.
In the trailer, Laura looks every bit the political wife turned politician and wraps herself in god, motherhood and the American flag. At the end of the day, Laura really does have the governor’s mansion, even the White House in her vision.
The film is directed by Jim Field Smith based on a screenplay by Jason Micallef. Check out the trailer below.
