Leonardo DiCaprio leads a list of Hollywood movers and shakers who are breaking the mold to make pictures they believe in, even if it means actors become directors and writers and directors become moguls to make things happen. These are the Hollywood mavericks, according to Details magazine.

Tinseltown revolves around lists —the ultimate being the Oscars– and magazines are only too happy to make up new ones to feed the town’s egos. Whether the new Hollywood list is any different than the old Hollywood list is open to debate, but it still begs the question: Who’s on the list?

With an A-Lister like Dicaprio leading the pack, others are more than happy to fall in line. Take for example, Chris Colfer. He’s singled out for his work as a writer, director and executive producer on “Struck By Lightning,” a coming-of-age movie based on his book.

“Rumors of Hollywood’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. However, everything is upside down: The top-heavy old-guard studio dinosaurs bear the whiff of desperation, while the real power is bubbling up from below in the form of an inspired and mobilized creative class,” the magazine notes.

“All this constructive chaos is being fueled by the fevered, risk-taking innovators who see tumult and transition as the time to pounce, to kick up dust rather than wait for it to settle,” it adds.

The magazine slices and dices the list into categories: “The Survivors” (Andrew Rannells, Chris Messina); the “Career Opportunists” (Colfer, Lauren Miller, Josh Radnor, Brit Marling); “The Next Big Thing (comedian Rebel Wilson); “The Idea Man” (John Krasinski) and “The Directors” (Ariel Vromen, Mark Webber, Fred Savage, Max Winkler, Lake Bell).

Of course, no real maverick would ever agree to be on a list of “mavericks.” That’s counter to the very definition of a maverick. Just ask Dustin Hoffman. Now there’s a maverick.
