Fantine’s misfortune begins in Paris where she is wooed by a smarmy gentleman. She falls in love, only to be cruelly rejected when she becomes pregnant.
She’s forced to leave Cosette with the Thénardiers, a corrupt innkeeper and his selfish, cruel wife, who abuse Cosette and force her to work as a scullery maid. Fantine makes her way to Montfermeil, where she finds work in Jean Valjean’s factory.

But she loses her job when it’s discovered that she has an illegitimate daughter.
She turns to prostitution to get money to pay the Thénardiers to care for Cossett. But she’s arrested after an altercation in the street, and Javert, played by Russell Crowe, sentences her to six months in prison. Valjean feels responsible for her predicament and offers to rescue Cosette from the horrid inn keepers.
He also takes Fantine under his wing, but she dies from consumption. In the clip, Fantine is still employed at the factory and sings “At the End of the Day.” Fantine laments her situation as a poor factory work and defends herself against scorn for having an illegitimate child.
Co-workers accuse her of sleeping around after work to help pay for Cossett’s upkeep and demand that she be fired. The foreman, who is mad at Fantine for resisting his advances, takes his revenge on learning her supposed secret life, and sends her to the streets. Check out the song below.
