Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and other cast members from the new musical film, “Les Miserables,” show off their vocal skills in five new clips featuring songs from the Victor Hugo classic.

The ambitious British production, directed by Tom Hooper and scripted by William Nicholson, stars a high-powered ensemble cast that also includes Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried and Samantha Barks.

The film is actually an adaption of the musical by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer. Their work, in turn, is based on the classic 1862 French novel by Hugo.

The novel, one of the longest written in history, begins in 1815, following the collapse of Napoleonic France and ends with the 1832 June Rebellion, an outburst sparked by the restoration of the monarchy.

Set against that background, ex-convict Jean Valjean strives for redemption from his past, inspired by a desire to be a force of good in the world. But he is pursued by Police Inspector Javert, who is determined to send him back to jail for his past crimes, even though he was pardoned and paroled.

The film has been in the works since the 1980s and parallels the hugely successful Broadway production. It’s scheduled for release on Christmas Day.

The five new clips feature Jackman, Hathaway, Redmayne, Crowe and Barks performing songs from the movie. Unlike previous musicals, where actors mouth the songs and add vocals later from studio recordings, “Les Miserables'” songs are sung live during filming.

The technique is supposed to give the actors more leeway to inject more nuance and emotion into the songs. Check out the clips above, and let us know your thoughts, and click here to follow TheImproper on Twitter for all the latest film updates.
