Will Smith and son Jaden Smith star in a new trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s science fiction film “After Earth.” Father and son return from a deep space mission but this is not their father’s earth.

Or their grandfather’s. It’s 1,000 years in the future long after humans have abandoned the planet. It’s reverted to its wild state with all kinds of dangers.

Humans have evacuated to a new planet, Nova Prime, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced them to leave Earth. That’s where legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and son Kitai Raige (Jaden) are headed when an astroid storm damages their space craft.

They’re forced to crash land on earth. Both survive but the ship is wrecked and the ship’s rescue beacon has separated from the ship. Young Kitai must overcome his fears and travel across the now hostile planet so they can be rescued.

The heavy message here is that father and estranged son must learn to work together and trust one another, if they hope to make it home.

The film also stars Isabelle Fuhrman, Kristofer Hivju, Gabriel Caste, Daha Mohamed and Zoe Kravitz.

Of note, the picture was film using Sony’s new CineAlta F65 camera. The digital camera has been used on such features as Avatar (2009), Tron: Legacy (2010) and Tom Cruise’s new film “Oblivion.”
