Much of the new movie takes place in an around Earth as evil terrorist John Harrison takes the fight home. Alice Eve, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg all reprise their roles.
The new trailer builds on a previously released clip with about a minute of new footage that showcases the movie’s incredible special effects. It’s a kaleidoscopic whirlwind of explosions, falling debris, a joyride through low orbit and a jaunt into the Red Forest.
Director J.J. Adams takes a few cues from “Dark Knight Rises” Director Christopher Nolan and hypes the creep quotient with a noir feel and foreboding orchestral music.
Despite the widescreen special effects–monumental explosions and breathtaking panoramas of beauty and destruction–Adams also takes the fight up close and personal for members of the Star Trek crew. In one scene Kirk, struggles with self-doubt.
“You think you can’t make mistakes but there comes a moment when you realize you’re wrong about that, and you’re going to get yourself and everyone under your command killed,” he’s heard in a voice over, digging into the pit of his stomach.
And terrorist John Harrison warns: “You think you’re safe. You are not.”
There’s no question the movie’s premise is ripped right from today’s headlines even if it’s set in the 23rd Century. Our own ever-present fear of a terror attack, or worse, a random Columbine-style random massacre, has been tapped by the writers to fuel the film’s suspense.
Harrison makes his war personal as he sets out after members of the Enterprise crew. “He tears into the fabric of both the world and the Enterprise family, and he leaves behind him a trail of devastation,” Cumberatch said of his character.
The film hits theaters May 17. In the meantime, check out the new trailer and click here to follow TheImproper on Twitter for all of the latest Star Trek updates.
