janelevy-evildead-frontJane Levy is as gross as she can be in a new red band trailer for horror movie “Evil Dead.” But the release has provoked a heated debate among fans over whether the remake will do justice to the original. Is this homage, or another Hollywood ripoff?

Sam Raimi created the films, supposedly about the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, a fictional Sumerian Book of the Dead, that a group of teens discover while partying at a cabin deep in the Tennessee woods.

The original series, which developed a strong cult following included “The Evil Dead” (1981), “Evil Dead II” (1987), and “Army of Darkness” (1992). Raimi wrote and directed all of them.

The remake is the first film without Raimi as director, although he is listed as a co-writer and producer. Diablo Cody is listed as the screenwriter. She previously wrote “Jennifer’s Body,” a horror film with Megan Fox that flopped, although she’s best known for indie hit “Juno” with Ellen Page.

Levy, 23, plays Mia, who travels to the cabin with her brother and friends, who want to help her kick her drinking habit. Shiloh Fernandez is David, Jessica Lucas is Olivia, Lou Taylor Pucci is Eric and Elizabeth Blackmore plays Natalie.

Some “Evil Dead” fans are fearful the remake will be too trashy or too unfaithful to the original, which also was laced with comedic relief. This film looks like a dead-on screamfest.
