Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton turn Grimm’s fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” on its head in a new red-band trailer for the Tommy Wirkola film, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.” It’s so scary it’s funny.
In a reimagining that makes “Snow White and the Huntsman” look tame by comparison, Renner and Arterton blast their way through the evil forest.
Forget about breadcrumbs, Hansel and Gretel in this movie are grown up witch-killing machines. They’re out to get an evil coven of witches headed by Famke Janssen, who plays the evil witch Muriel. Peter Stormare, Zoe Bell and Thomas Mann also co-star.
Wirkola recently described it as an action movie with horror elements and some dark humor. The question is how did he pull together such an A-List cast for what looks and sounds like a B-movie?
The film has suffered its own travails on the way to theaters. It’s scheduled to be released Jan. 25 in both 3D and IMAX by MTV Films.
According to a plot summary, the Mayor of Augsburg, Germany hires Hansel and Gretel to rid the town and surrounding forests of Muriel and her coven before she can sacrifice local children during the “Blood Moon” ceremony. The dynamic duo also run afoul of Sheriff Berringer (Stormare) who is conducting his own witch-hunt.
