Anne Hathaway drove BAFTA viewers batty with an acceptance speech that was so long she even thanked “Les Miserables” author Victor Hugo, though he’s been dead for 127 years.
She won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in the musical film, but her speech was the talk of the tabloids after the UK equivalent of the Oscars were handed out over the weekend.
The British are known for their stiff upper lip, but many viewers clearly lost their patience with the 30-year-old star during her long, emotional diatribe.
“If Hathaway thanked Victor Hugo, will Bigelow have to thank Bin Laden?” one wit tweeted, according to London’s Daily Mail.
BAFTA Fashions Long on Elegance
The reference was to Director Kathryn Bigelow who helmed “Zero Dark Thirty,” about the hunt for the terrorist mastermind. Bigelow was nominated for Best Director and the film was up for best picture.
It’s hard to tell whether Hathaway was putting one over on the audience, or simply let gratitude run amok. George Clooney presented the award, maybe that threw her off stride.
Depending on your point a view, Hathaway was the highlight or the lowlight of the ceremony, which saw “Argo” win the top award for Best Film and Ben Affleck win for Best Director.
Daniel Day-Lewis won the Best Actor Award for Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” although Spielberg was not nominated in the Best Director category. At the Academy Awards, just the opposite happened. Affleck was snubbed, while Spielberg made the short list.
Christoph Waltz won the BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” while Trantino won for best original screenplay.
Emmanuelle Riva, who turns 86 in two weeks, pulled an upset an won the best actress award for her role in “Amour.” Riva is also up for an Academy Award and now many say she may give Jennifer Lawrence a run for the prize. Lawrence is up for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook.”
“Les Miserables” was aced out for Best British Film by “Skyfall,” which is considered the best Bond film ever made.
