Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man will have a whole army to deal with in the upcoming sequel Iron Man 3, and a new television spot provides the first glimpse of what that threat will look like, courtesy of the Mandarin, of course.

Marvel also provides a more new shots of the Mandarin in action, with a campy take-off of a presidential address, complete with the salutary “My Fellow Americans,” in a voice strangely reminiscent of Richard Nixon.

Was that on purpose? If so, Director Shane Black has a twisted sense of humor, which is all the better considering Downey’s character Tony Stark would be better named Tony Snark.

The trailer provides some of that, too. After the Mandarin threatens to destroy the United States, Tony remarks in a voice-over to some familiar scenes: “You know, it’s quiet moments like these when I realize what a superhero I am.”

All the while, the video cuts to flashes of people tumbling from a decompressing airliner and Stark flying the rescue in his Iron Man suit. Stark also unveils his Iron Army.

The Mandarin also shows his face. It’s a gnarly Ben Kingsley, decked out in a beard and way too much jewelry.

After a round of rock ’em, sock ’em robots, Tony turns to Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes, aka Don Cheadle and says: “This is what happens when you hang out with me.”

Downside: No Pepper Pots. Stark’s love interest played by Gwyneth Paltrow plays a much bigger part in the new movie; she’s targeted by the Mandarin as a way to get to Stark. But she doesn’t make the spot.
