georgeclooney-gravityGeorge Clooney has been to deep space and the vastness of the Arabian desert, but a new trailer for his movie “Gravity,” takes him into low earth orbit, after his shuttle is shot out from under him. But don’t worry he has Sandra Bullock to keep him company.

Clooney’s movies often have a political point, much like 2005’s “Syriana” focused on petro-politics and 2009’s “The Men Who Stare at Goats” was a send up of the CIA and the spy game.

But it’s hard to see one here. “Gravity” is about two astronauts, Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock), a medical research scientist and shuttle commander Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). They’re stranded in space, with no way to communicate with earth, when micro-meteors destroy their spacecraft.

Where the plot goes from there is anyone’s guess. The trailer doesn’t provide much of a clue.

The movie is considered a departure for Bullock, who has starred in mostly comedy-dramas. Clooney took on the project after Robert Downey, Jr., was forced to turn it down by other commitments.

Marion Cotillard, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively were also considered for the female lead until the role went to Bullock, 48, who definitely makes a more credible astronaut.

The trailer contasts the beauty of the earth silhouetted against a black sky as the sun peers over the horizon, with the sudden terror of a meteor strike. ‘Beautiful, don’t you think?’ says Kowalsky before all hell breaks loose.

Like two seamen adrift in a vast ocean after a shipwreck, Kowalsky and Stone are left to fend for themselves. Bullock is reduced to a speck as she loses her grip on spacecraft debris and floats into space.Space

Suddenly seems vast and empty. “Someone please copy,” Stone says as she hurtles along… alone.

Clooney was spotted over the weekend in Germany where he’s filming his latest project, “The Monuments to Men.” He celebrated his 52nd birthday with dinner with co-stars Matt Damon and Bill Murray.

The film will hit theaters in 3D and IMAX 3D on Oct. 4. Check out the trailer below and be sure to follow TheImproper on twitter for all the latest film updates.
