Pop star Christina Aguilera has entered the Death Valley of film careers for young starlets, would be starlets, and in some cases, veteran actresses. The official trailer for her movie “Burlesque” was released today (Aug. 5) and features her doing what she does best — singing.
Sony Pictures released the trailer for the Steven Antin’s “Burlesque,” starring Aguilera, Cher, Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Peter Gallagher, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell and Stanley Tucci.
Unfortunately, movies about strippers and burlesque queens have been career-killers.
Mostly notably, Demi Moore all but ruined her career by starring in the 1996 sex comedy “Striptease” with over-the-hill (even then) Burt Reynolds and Ving Rhames.
The 1995 film “Show Girls,” about Vegas strippers, nearly ruined Gina Gershorn and thoroughly trashed Elizabeth Berkley’s career.
More recently Britney Spears flopped as a stripper in 2002’s “Crossroads” and Mariah Carey bombed in 2001’s “Glitter.”
Even last year’s tribute to leggy showgirls, the movie musical “Nine,” flopped bady, despite an all-star cast that included Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren, Penelope Cruz and Judy Dench.
Now enter Aguilera, who stars as naive mid-western girl Ali. She bolts for tough streets of Tinseltown and lands a job as a waitress in struggling Burlesque Lounge.
Cher, 64, distorted plastic-surgery face and all, plays Tess, the salty ex-dancer and owner of the club, who is trying to save the place from bankruptcy.
Ali auditions for the job, and guess what? The next thing you know she’s filling the joint, dancing in sexy S&M leather costumes.
Of course, jealously and rivalries run rampant among the other dancers.
Aguilera reportedly wrote four songs for the movie and Cher contributes two, including the theme, “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.”
“Burlesque” is slated for release on November 24 in the U.S.
