Springsteen was already huge by the time he appeared on “SNL” for the first time with host Tom Hanks. He’d had just released two albums that year.
A. Whitney Brown, Jan Hooks and longtime Weekend Update anchor Dennis Miller all left the show that year for Season 17. The show featured Dana Carvey, Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Kevin Nealon, Chris Rock and Julia Sweeney. Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider and David Spade played supporting roles.
Bruce made his second appearance a decade later on Season 28 in 2002. Matt Damon hosted. It was the final season for Dean Edwards, Chris Kattan, Victoria Jackson and Tracy Morgan.
The regular cast included Rachel Dratch, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Darrell Hammond, Chris Parnell, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Horatio Sanz. Listed as featured players were Fred Armisen and Seth Meyers.
That year, Springsteen released The Rising, his first studio album with the full E Street Band in 18 years.
Last night, he performed the lead track off his new album “The Ties That Bind” and “Meet Me In The City.” The album is a re-issue of 1980’s The Ties that Bind, with new material and previously unseen concert and rehearsal video.
The band will hit the road in January for a North American tour. It will take him to Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles. He’ll wrap in New York with two shows at Madison Square Garden.
