Miley Cyrus proved absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder, at least when she and her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth show up at the same Oscars party.
Both handled the encounter badly.
The pop star and actor studiously “stayed away from each other” during a pre-Oscars party, according to an eyewitness.
Both showed up at the WME pre-Oscars party on Friday (Feb. 7) and managed to avoid coming face-to-face all night long.
“They stayed away from each other. Liam left when Miley and her parents got there,” a source told UsWeekly.
On the plus side, Liam kept his Australian cool during the long-distance encounter, even when Miley showed up with her parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, in tow.
And it seems as though the Cyrus family felt similarly about Liam’s presence at the bash.
“Miley’s parents were staying separate from Liam and were hanging out in the back area of the party.
“They avoided him, but didn’t seem they had any beef with him. Miley also didn’t seem to be bothered by the fact that Liam was there because he left soon after she walked in.”
Miley is currently dating singer Cody Simpson, but she sparked rumors she’d split from him in December, when she shared a song she’d penned a few years ago titled ‘My Sad Christmas Song’.
“A sad Christmas song I wrote a few years back right before the holidays. Was feeling like shit cause I couldn’t be with the one I loved. Even with a house full of family and friends I still felt alone,” she wrote on Twitter.
In ways that still feels relevant and someone reading this right now could possibly relate! If you feel lonely this season just know YOU ARE COMPLETELY MADE OF MAGIC!” she added.
“You are as special as a snowflake, beautifully unique and I hope inside your soul feels light, hope, peace … and joy knowing how singularly amazing YOU are! Love always wins!”
The split, however, was attributed to the age-old struggle with separate careers.
“Miley and Cody have their separate lives. Cody had to stay in LA but has visited Miley in Tennessee. They have a very easy relationship.”
Still, truth be told, neither Miley nor Liam handled the evening very well. They basically behaved like junior high schoolers at a Saturday night dance.
There is a definite protocol to follow in these situations. Here are the dos and don’ts according to evite.
Mentally prepare yourself. For anything. You don’t want to be caught off guard when it happens.
Remember why you broke up in the first place. Feelings don’t just go away overnight. It’s times like these that you need to remind yourself why you two broke up in the first place.
Take a moment to collect yourself. Breakups are hard — you’re allowed to be sad about them. You’re even allowed to wallow — but only temporarily, and definitely not in public.
Stay positive. You know what they say: Fake it till you make it. Don’t forget to smile. You want to seem happy, not mopey. Nobody likes a Debbie Downer.
Keep things short and simple. Now is not the time to fill your ex in on every detail of your life. If you’re feeling up to it — and you’re on good terms — then say a quick hello. But keep the convo short and sweet.
Don’t pretend like you didn’t see him/her. Unless your current relationship status with your ex is icier than the make-believe kingdom of Arendelle, then completely ignoring your ex will just seem childish and immature.
Don’t look like you’re trying too hard. You want to look put together, but not, like, Kardashian/Kanye put together. Remember, less is more.
Don’t try to make your ex jealous. Bringing a hot guy or girl as a plus-one or making out with a rando on the dance floor don’t exactly scream class.
Don’t drown your sorrows in liquor. Sure, drinking your melancholy away may sound like a good idea at first, but did you really need that fourth tequila shot? Probably not.
Don’t hook up with him/her. We repeat, do not hook up with your ex. It might seem like a good idea at the time, but rest assured, come the next morning you’ll wake up with nothing but regret.
