Chris Colfer Goes Back to School in Struck by Lightning (watch!) 1“Glee’s” Chris Colfer heads to the big screen in “Struck by Lightning,” but judging from a newly released trailer he doesn’t stray far from his Glee roots. No singing this time, though.

Colfer’s character, Carson Phillips, gets killed by lightning and spends the film looking back on his life and some of the things he did in high school to get into a journalism school.

He not only stars, but wrote the script. Director Brian Dannelly helms a cast that includes Christina Hendricks, “Modern Family’s” Sarah Hyland, Juno’s Allison Janney and Dermot Mulroney.

Colfer says his character represents “all the kids in high school who are overachieving in their own right and underappreciated for it just like I was.

“I think it’s very sarcastic and very real. I hope it goes to show that there are still lots and lots of smart kids out in the world,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

A subplot involves Phillips’ mother (Janney) who tries to reconnect with her son before he leaves home for college.

Colfer, who plays Kurt Hummel on “Glee,” debuted with the show in 2009. There have been various reports that he will either be off the show next season, or his role will substantially change because his character graduates. So heading to the big screen is a logical move.

Glee castmates Lea Michele and Cory Monteith have also made forays into feature films. Both are also on the bubble because they graduate from the fictional high school after this season.

“Struck By Lightning” will be released later this year. Check out the trailer below:
