Hedwig and the Angry Inch, starring Neil Patrick Harris followed with eight nominations.
“Breaking Bad’s” Bryan Cranston was one of the big Hollywood names in the running for best performance by an actor in a play. But conspicuously absent from any list was “Harry Potter’s” Daniel Radcliffe.
Radcliffe is starring in the revival of The Cripple of Inishmaan, a dark comedy by Martin McDonagh, which has won rave reviews. Radcliffe also starred in the London revival last year.
The play is up for best revival.
Groff is currently starring in HBO’s “Looking” and Liu is a cast member of “Elementary.”
Hugh Jackman, who will emcee the awards show this year, dropped in midway through the nominations to remind everyone that the show will air on CBS, June 8 from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.
“You never know who’s gonna show!” he said hinting at some surprises ahead.
